STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN - August 21, 2024

Splash, a leading nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the health and well-being of children through innovative water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) solutions, is excited to announce its participation in this year’s World Water Week in Stockholm. Attendees are invited to visit Splash and its subsidiary, Splash Social Enterprises (SSE), to experience firsthand the impact of our patented handwashing and drinking water stations, which are transforming schools around the globe.

Splash’s unique approach pairs our durable, child-friendly stations with behavior change programming, resulting in significant health improvements. In Addis Ababa, schools have seen a 22% increase in handwashing and a 17% reduction in respiratory illnesses. In Kolkata, our focus on durability and affordable maintenance has ensured a remarkable 97% functionality rate of our stations even five years after installation.

At World Water Week, we are also excited to debut our newest station design. These stations are designed specifically for low-resource settings, prioritizing ease of use, tamper resistance, and water conservation. Manufactured in East Africa, these stations are recyclable, come with a warranty, and will soon be available for purchase through SSE. These innovative solutions are already making a difference by providing daily access to safe drinking water and promoting good hygiene practices, fostering healthier children and communities.

Splash’s mission extends beyond immediate impact. We are at the forefront of a growing movement to ensure that children living in urban poverty have the resources they need to thrive. Our child-focused WASH and menstrual health solutions are designed in collaboration with local governments in some of the world’s largest cities. Our ultimate goal is to demonstrate that our model works, build local capacity, and transition management to local organizations and governments. By investing in infrastructure, training, and sustainability, we aim to create a replicable and scalable model that can be adopted by communities worldwide.

During World Water Week, Splash will also co-convene three important sessions:

1. Too Much or Too Little Water: Systems Change for Menstrual Health and Hygiene

This session will explore the challenges of ensuring access to clean water for menstrual health and hygiene (MHH) in various environments, including seasonally flooded areas and urban settings. Partners will share insights from Cambodia, Ethiopia, and India, discussing the importance of functional infrastructure and resilient WASH systems for managing menstruation with dignity.

Monday, August 26th, 8:00–9:00am (Online)

2. Gen-WASH: Creative and Fun Behavior Change Approaches for Systemic WASH

In this interactive session, participants will work in diverse teams to develop creative campaigns that promote WASH behavior change. Using methods such as sports, art, and storytelling, the session will encourage collaboration among WASH professionals to break down silos and drive systemic change.

Monday, August 26th, 9:00–10:30am (Room 27, Level 2)

3. WASH and Menstrual Health for Girls’ Education and Sustainable Development

This session will highlight the critical role of WASH and menstrual health in supporting girls’ education and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Featuring a global update on WASH in schools, it will showcase examples of how improved menstrual health and WASH programming can lead to better educational outcomes and gender equity.

Tuesday, August 27, 11:00am–12:30pm (A4, Level 6)

“We are thrilled to discuss our research findings as well as present alongside inspiring organizations in the WASH-M space,” says Megan Williams, Splash’s Director of Behavior Change. “World Water Week is an excellent forum for people to share knowledge, problem-solve, and work together to enhance the impact of our WASH programs for a sustainable future.”

Splash invites all World Water Week attendees to join us in these sessions and learn more about our innovative approaches to creating healthier, more resilient communities. Together, we can ensure that every child has the opportunity to thrive.
