Head of Janitors and Guards
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
Adanech Feyissa stands in front of an orange Splash station, washing her hands. It’s midday, the sun is out, and students are currently in class.
For three years, Adanech has been working as the head of janitors and guards at Lebu Secondary School, which encompasses grades 10 through 12 and serves more than 1,700 students. She is committed to creating a safe, hygienic environment for students to learn in, dedicating seven years and counting to being a janitor at various schools.
When asked what she enjoys most about her work, Adanech reflects on the hard work and amount of energy that goes into maintaining a safe and clean environment for students. Although challenging, she loves seeing the results of her hard work and how it has a positive impact on those around her.
Prior to Splash’s implementation at the school, Adanech reflects on how there were not separate stations for drinking and handwashing and that students would often drink water directly from the untreated water tanks. Since then, Splash stations have been installed and Adanech and her colleagues have received training on the importance of good hygiene practices and how to take care of minor maintenance needs.
Students are appearing in the courtyard now, gathering at the stations to wash their hands, and Adanech continues to reflect, “I love what Splash is doing at schools. More than anything, I love looking at students enjoying drinking clean water. I hope all students in Ethiopia get this opportunity.”
