We’ve talked before about Human-Centered Design and how Splash utilizes this concept in everything we design for our programs. Whether it’s video, written curriculum, or physical infrastructure, we believe in creating solutions tailored to the needs and behaviors of the people we serve. We want to share how we arrived at Version 3 of our handwashing station (HWS) design, created with Splash Social Enterprises.

Why Behavior Change Matters

Our handwashing stations provide students and school staff a place to wash hands, sure, but they also foster behavior change. We’ve integrated thoughtful design elements to encourage students to adopt consistent hygiene practices:

  • Distinctive Colors: Differentiating handwashing stations from drinking water stations ensures clarity of use.
  • Room for More: Troughs and taps are designed to support multiple people—group handwashing becomes a social activity, making it more engaging for students.
  • Hygienic Surfaces: Smooth, easy-to-clean materials promote cleanliness and maintenance.
  • Customizable Backsplashes: Backsplashes can showcase hygiene behaviors, reinforcing the importance of handwashing.

Introducing Version 3: Designed for Impact, Built to Last

Our latest handwashing station builds on feedback and lessons from earlier iterations. Version 3 is designed to thrive in outdoor environments, resist tampering, and meet the diverse needs of children and adults. Here’s what’s new:

  • Tamperproof, Water-Conserving Taps: These taps release water in a fan shape, reducing waste and minimizing splash-back. They’re designed to withstand vandalism and heavy use.
  • Enhanced Cleaning Features: Curved edges make every component easier to clean, ensuring better hygiene and longer-lasting stations.
  • Improved Foot Pedals: The new pedals require less force and allow children to activate them while keeping their heels on the ground. Water flow stops immediately when pressure is released, preventing unnecessary wastage.
  • Behavioral Nudges with Mirrors: Mirrors integrated into the design have been proven to boost handwashing rates. In Ethiopia, 65% of children used the mirrors during testing, making this an essential addition.
  • Height Versatility: The stations accommodate users of all ages with adaptable configurations.
  • Soap Holder Options: Three distinct designs cater to different markets and enable schools to use familiar soap types.

Version 3 handwashing station:

Designed for Durability and Accessibility

  • Our handwashing stations are built to endure. They’re:
  • Engineered to last approximately five years in outdoor conditions.
  • Highly resistant to tampering, rough play, and wear.
  • Equipped for manual filling or piped water sources, including cisterns, rooftop tanks, and municipal connections.
  • Flexible for installation as wall-mounted or standalone units.

Learning and Growing Together

At Splash, one of our core values is to make mistakes and learn from them. Every version of our handwashing station reflects this principle. By listening to the communities we serve, we’ve been able to design solutions that truly work and improve children’s well-being.

With Version 3, we’re creating a station that provides an opportunity for better health, greater confidence, and brighter futures.
