[NAIROBI] — [2 October 2024] — Splash Social Enterprises (SSE) is excited to announce the launch of Version 3 (V3) of its handwashing stations, designed to tackle pressing challenges in water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) sectors globally. Following two years of human-centered design and extensive field testing of Version 2 in schools across Addis Ababa and Bahir Dar, Ethiopia, and Kolkata, India, V3 represents a significant leap forward in quality, durability, and usability.

UNICEF reports that up to 50% of WASH projects fail within two to five years, primarily due to low-quality, expensive products that are hard to maintain. Splash’s durable, colorful, child-friendly, and locally produced handwashing and drinking water stations stand out in the WASH marketplace, offering a sustainable solution that encourages healthy habits and improved hygiene. Previous versions have successfully reduced respiratory diseases by 17% in schools where they have been implemented, showcasing their effectiveness.

“V3 was developed with a deep understanding of the needs of our communities, informed by rigorous research and user feedback,” said Connie Smith, who leads SSE’s global strategy. “Our goal is to create a durable, tamperproof, impactful solution that not only addresses immediate health needs but also fosters long-term behavioral change.”

Key features of the V3 handwashing station include:

  • Tamperproof, water-conserving taps to reduce waste and prevent vandalism.
  • Easy-to-clean components designed with smooth edges and maintenance hatches.
  • Foot pedals for touch-free operation, promoting hygiene.
  • Behavioral nudges such as mirrors to encourage effective handwashing.
  • Appropriate height for use by both children and adults.
  • Three distinct soap holder designs to meet the diverse needs of various markets.

Through partnerships with organizations like the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Splash has demonstrated significant improvements in hygiene practices and health outcomes. In schools where Splash stations are installed alongside behavioral change programs, over 48% of students are now washing their hands with soap and water, a substantial increase from the 20% observed without these interventions.

“Our commitment to local production has not only made our stations more affordable but has also created jobs within the communities we serve,” added Smith. “With the recent exclusive launch of local production in Kenya and plans for expansion to East Africa from this hub, we are set to revolutionize WASH solutions for kids with stations that are designed for impact and built to last.”

As Splash Social Enterprises embarks on this new chapter with the V3 handwashing stations, the organization remains dedicated to enhancing health and hygiene outcomes for children, families, and communities worldwide.
